When things go south, as the saying goes, where do you turn for help? When your troubles increase and everything seems to be going wrong, how do you respond? The enemy, the devil, is prowling around looking for something to devour, someone who is in trouble. God, however, is a solid rock, a strong fortress where we run for shelter and protection. God alone is a powerful advocate and our strength in times of need. He is the doorway to hope. When Joshua led his army against the city of Jericho, it was no ordinary battle. God told Joshuaerock to have his soldiers march around the city, not once but seven times. Joshua relied on God, but this was a very unusual plan of attack. Did he tell God that His plan was foolish and launch an invasive attach instead? No, Joshua obeyed the Lord. He knew that his only hope came from God alone. When we are in trouble or find ourselves in stressful situations where we cannot seem to find an answer to a persistent problem, where do we turn for help? Psalm 62:5-7 describes David’s heart when he was in a terrible upheaval and his reputation was being slandered. David prayed and declared that he would wait quietly before God because “...My hope is in Him. He alone is my Rock and my salvation”. David had many powerful friends, and none of them could turn his ugly situation around. He steadied his soul, looked up to heaven, and asked God to protect him as he ran to Him for refuge. David experienced God’s unfailing love and mercy. The Lord was his secure place, his fortress. When we are troubled and buffeted by winds of adversity, our hope must remain steadfast in our faithful God. Declare to the enemy of your soul, like David, “My deliverance and honor come from God alone; therefore, I will trust in Him”. Do not give up or give in. God has prepared a safe shelter for us to rest in until the storm passes. And if God tells you to do something that you don’t understand, be obedient. After seven days of marching around Jericho the army gave a mighty shout, and the walls of the city came down! God’s unique battle plan was successful, and Joshua conquered his enemies. Let the Lord lead you and wait quietly before Him for His mercies are new every morning. Breathe in hope. The Lord is our strength and salvation who carries us through the trials we face in life. Jesus Christ is our living hope, ready to help us in our times of need as we trust in Him.
