From the time they are young, children hear the conversations of adults around the dinner table that reinforces the notion that people make their own destiny. Parents want their kids to have a successful career, a family, and a nice house to live in. They tell their children to set high goals and make good money. These conversations are good but can have an unintended adverse effect on young adults. It can lead them to believe they are self-made men and women who control of their own destiny. Self-made men and women can become prideful and too often believe they are self-sufficient. We have free will and make our own choices, but the prosperity and favor we enjoy are a result of God’s blessings. Many people look to religion to satisfy a need for spirituality in their lives. They may acknowledge God as a Supreme Being who is holy. But religion is based on a person’s works and self-efforts to earn a place in heaven and have right standing with God. Salvation comes by faith alone in Jesus Christ and begins with a personal relationship with Him. Well-meaning believers often struggle to win God’s approval. If you feel pressure to perform well in order to be accepted by God, it is essential to surrender yourself to Jesus and accept His amazing grace. There is no need to be a self-made spiritual being. Jesus bore our sins on the cross and the punishment for our sins went on Him. He is the holy sacrificial Lamb. There is no more work for man to accomplish in order to be saved; Jesus washed our sins and guilt away. By faith we are saved and that is a gift from God. All glory be to the Lord Most High! This truth can be difficult to embrace for those who hold onto the guilt of past sins. They are striving to be worthy of salvation instead of receiving the finished work of Christ. Scripture says, because God’s righteous Servant suffered, He made it possible for many to be counted righteous for He bore all their sins. Isaiah 53:11 Joy and peace are a result of our faith in Christ. Those who understand that their true identity is in Christ rest in His finished work. Imagine what your life would be like if you enjoyed your freedom in Christ instead of always trying to measure up? The law points out our sins, but God offers people a personal relationship with His Son. Therefore, enter into Jesus’ rest and follow the Holy Spirit’s lead as you celebrate your new life as a child of the King.
