The world’s advice to people who want to be successful is to learn how to become a self-made individual. Many people search for self-made success conferences or gurus who will enlighten their inner self and teach them the quick path to success. These teachers of success get large sums of money from people who want to be at the top of their game, and they give no guarantee of good results. At the end of the conference, people feel good, and the celebrities get thundering applause for sharing their ideas. In reality, self-made individuals forget that their Creator gifted them with wisdom and talent. They take all the credit for their success without acknowledging God as the One who blessed them with divine favor. Even Christians forget to give God the glory that is due Him when they prosper. The Lord blesses our lives with His grace and teaches us how to prosper in our relationships, careers, and other pursuits. “…I AM the Lord your God who teaches you to profit, who leads you by the way you should go.” Isaiah 48:17 Therefore, ask yourself these questions to determine if you’re giving the glory to God for your achievements and success. First, when someone praises you for your accomplishments, do you remember to give glory to God either in private or in public? In humility, we must honor the Lord for His guidance and blessings. Second, when you attain a measure of success, are you willing to help others be promoted or is your focus entirely on your own achievements? Some of the most wealthy, successful people are the most miserable people who do not handle fame and fortune well at all. It brought them misery and, in some cases, an early death. James 3:14-16 warns us with words of wisdom. He exhorts people not to give in to jealousy and selfish ambition. He describes the world’s wisdom as unspiritual and even demonic. Where selfishness exists, there will be wickedness also the Apostle warns us. Look at humble Abraham, the father of many nations. God blessed Abraham and made a covenant with Him. He became an extremely wealthy man with so much property and herds that the land could not hold them all. Abraham had a large household with many servants and a small army to defend his family and property! Yet with all his wealth and success, Abraham remained humble before the Lord. He always acknowledged God as his source of blessing and worshiped Him. We must follow this example and humbly thank the Lord for the awesome blessings He bestows on us. The Lord delights in our prosperity and causes us to succeed. Don’t buy into the world’s ways for becoming a self-made man or woman. Give the Lord the honor due His holy Name and serve Him with a grateful heart for He delights in blessing us with His grace and favor.
