Jesus told the Church that those who truly love Him will obey His teachings and He will live in them. “My Father will love them, and we will come to them and make our home with them.” John 14:23 It’s an awesome privilege to know that the Lord God Almighty makes a home in our hearts. As children of God, our love for Jesus must be evident by our actions and how we live our lives. If we realize the immense love God has for us and that Jesus forgives all our sins, we willingly offer ourselves in obedience to Christ. Our obedience to the Word also depends on our listening skills. Sometimes, like stubborn children, we want our own way and rely on ourselves instead of Jesus. At times we are preoccupied with outside influences that grab our attention and miss the quiet voice of the Lord. It takes a conscious effort to be quiet and listen to God’s voice daily and obey Jesus’ teachings. Psalm 32:8 tells us God is speaking to us, “I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go. I will counsel you with my loving eye on you. Don’t be like a stubborn mule … “. Jesus, our good Shepherd, said His sheep know His voice. There are times when, in hindsight, we realize that we could’ve avoided needless suffering if we had obeyed Jesus. Israel left Egypt and took a 40 year journey in the desert to arrive at a place very close to the beginning of their journey because they stubbornly refused to obey God. But we learn from our mistakes, ask for forgiveness, and move forward. Sharpen your listening skills and develop a posture of paying attention to God’s voice by having quiet time in prayer and by reading the Bible. The more we listen and obey Jesus’ teachings, the more understanding and spiritual wisdom will be given to us, Mark 4:23. That’s a promise of increased wisdom. As our wise Counselor and perfect Teacher, the Spirit is always available to help us love and obey Jesus.
