A posture of humility is pleasing to God. Proverbs, the Bible’s book of wisdom, tells us that before receiving honor, one must be humble. When we walk in humility, we're don't think more highly of ourselves than we should. This principle is applied to our estimation of self-sufficiency. However, God holds us in His heart with great esteem and love as His children. We are the beloved bride of Christ. Yet human nature tends to lean toward pride and self-sufficiency. When we leave the path of biblical truth and go our own way, we stray into the path of the ungodly where confusion and sin can follow. The prophet Zephaniah warned the Jewish priests of God's impending judgment on them because their hearts were far from Him, and they had wandered away. As priests, they were anointed to lead the people in worship and in following God’s commands. They routinely professed allegiance to the God of Abraham. Yet they practiced idolatry and bowed down to the sun, moon, and stars! Zephaniah tells us that they even offered sacrifices to the pagan god Molech in detestable ways. What a mixture of hypocrisy. In today’s culture, where everything God calls unholy is tolerated and accepted, idolatry has crept into the church as well. It is important not to follow the trends of society or rely on self-sufficiency. God gives us His favor and blessings because He loves us. Our health, talents, gifts, and resources come from Him. God searches for those who worship Him in Spirit and in truth. True followers fix their eyes on Jesus and stay on the path of the righteousness. The Lord will honor those who walk with Him in humility, and one day we will see Him face to face in all His glory and splendor.
