God's Surpassing Greatness

People make many decisions every day and some of them are life-changing ones. If we want to stay on the right path God has for our lives, we must learn how to hear His voice. The Living Word always speaks the truth, but we must be still and listen. The Holy Spirit instructs those who are searching for truth. The Truth, Jesus, is not subject to our natural mind and human reasoning. Wisdom tells us to trust the Lord with all our hearts and not to rely on our own understanding (Proverbs 3:5). Jesus’ surpassing greatness is revealed to all men through the power of the Holy Spirit, the Revelator. We must pray for a  revelation of the deep love of Christ and His surpassing greatness according to Ephesians 3:18-19. We can know the love of Christ that surpasses all knowledge and be filled with the peace of God that surpasses all understanding. To surpass means to excel and to go far beyond. We become intimately acquainted with Jesus by spending time in His holy presence. Those who have a casual relationship with God have not experienced the sweet intimate fellowship that He offers us. The apostles prayed for Christians to grow in their relationship with the Lord,  “… asking God, the glorious Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, to give you spiritual wisdom and insight so that you might grow in your knowledge of God.” (Ephesians 1:17). Almighty God’s surpassing greatness is unlimited and all-powerful, yet He bends down to listen to our prayers.

God’s surpassing greatness is described in the book of Job (see chapters 38, 39) in stunning detail when He answered Job’s complaint against Him: “Where were you when I laid the foundation of the earth?” and, “Have you ever in your life commanded the morning and made the dawn know its place?” Like Job, we stand in awe, humbled by the Creator’s mighty power and sovereignty. Almighty God’s surpassing greatness is described in Isaiah 44:29, “I AM the Lord who created all things…” and in Isaiah 46:9, “I AM God, I alone! I AM God and there is no one else like Me.” God is supreme, and His splendor is displayed for all to see. God lays out His path of blessing through salvation in Christ and promised that those who earnestly seek Him will find Him (Jeremiah 29:13). God’s desire is to reveal His amazing glory and surpassing greatness in wonderful ways.
