Kids play hide and seek when they’re little. Close your eyes and start counting, then open them and find your friends. But some kids don’t follow the basic rule that the finder can’t peek while kids run and hide. In a way they broke their word and saw the hiding places. Today, people don’t give as much weight to their spoken word as they used to. It used to be when someone gave their word and shook hands regarding buying or selling something, it was like a contract. Their word meant that the agreement would happen just as if they had a legal document or a covenant. But times have changed. For example, marriage vows are being altered dramatically. Some couples delete words of commitment like “in sickness or in health” and “until death do us part.” Statistics show that the divorce rate has increased. Many of the younger generation don’t even want to exchange wedding vows but choose to live together. God’s design for marriage was for a man and woman to enter a holy covenant with Him. He will bless, protect, and sustain us in that holy covenant.
When people read about covenants in the Bible their understanding is limited. Words don’t hold much weight because society has moved away from commitments. However, God’s holy everlasting covenants are sacred. His Word always accomplishes what it was sent to do. Almighty God made solemn covenants with men according to His plan for salvation. He covenanted with Abraham, David, and others. All believers in Christ are in a covenant with God that is ratified by Jesus’ blood. Our gracious Father lavishes us with incredible benefits and covenant blessings because of His extravagant love. God’s covenants are powerful because He is holy, and His Word is absolute truth. The Most High God made a covenant promise with righteous Abraham when he was very old and childless that he would have children more than the sand on the shore. Can anyone count the grains of sand on the beach? God told righteous Abraham, “I will establish My covenant between you and Me and your offspring after you through their generations for an everlasting covenant.” He made Abraham the father of many nations. Genesis 17:4-7 God kept His word and Isaac was born because Abraham believed God for the promised son.
The Lord made a sacred covenant with King David that from his lineage the Righteous One, Messiah, would come and save men from their sins. God’s Son came to earth, and Light came into the world. Jesus offers eternal life to all who believe in Him and enters into a sacred covenant with them. Believers must understand the incredible benefits of this covenant and their role as joint heirs with Christ. He forgives our sins and heals all our diseases. He crowns us with loving-kindness and redeems our lives from the pit of hell. He satisfies our mouth with good things and renews our youth like the eagle’s. Psalm 103 God adopts all who will come into covenant with Him by faith into His family because of His mercy and love. The Lamb of God fulfilled the Old Covenant when He put His own blood on the mercy seat. His blood covered our sins and fulfilled the Law as the final sacrifice. Forgiveness of sins and new life come by faith in Jesus’ covenant love. The Light of the world conquered the devil and darkness. In the eternal beginning the Word was with God and was God and created all things. Jesus is the Word, the Sent One, that cannot be overcome by darkness. John 1:1-5. What a blessed Savior!
Jesus will come again and fulfill prophecy. “Before Him will be gathered all the nations, and He will separate people one from another as a shepherd separates sheep from the goats.” This describes judgment that is to come. The King will tell the sheep they have inherited God’s kingdom. The King will tell the goats they are cursed to eternal fire prepared for the devil and demons. Matthew 25:31-40 There is a lot at stake for all who reject Christ. The Lord has commissioned Christians to tell the world that the Word came to give true life, and He is coming again to judge the world. You must be born of the Spirit to enter God’s kingdom. The pleasures and sinful attractions of this world will soon fade. We must repent and follow Jesus. A glorious future awaits those who are reconciled to God.
