Christ the Anointed One

Jesus Christ is risen! The joy of knowing that we are saved because Jesus paid the heavy price to ransom us from death is humbling. As we study scriptures about Jesus, we notice that He has many significant titles. He is our Lord, Son of God, and Son of Man. Jesus was known to His disciples as the Master. He knew more about the Torah as a little boy than the most educated sages of the law and the prophets. Jesus is the Christ.

The Greek word for Christ is Christos translated from the Hebrew word Mashiach or Messiah. This special title, Messiah, has deep and significant meaning. The verb masach means “to anoint.” Messiah is a powerful title meaning “the Anointed One,” the Christ. Those called to be prophets, priests, and kings in the old covenant were anointed by the Lord. They were set apart for service and anointed with holy oil. The oil represents the Holy Spirit. Jesus, Son of Man, was anointed and filled with the Holy Spirit. At Pentecost Jesus’ followers saw the manifestation of the Holy Spirit and the Anointing. They all had tongues of fire on their heads and spoke in other tongues. They went forth in power and preached and performed miracles in Jesus’ Name.

Some people thought Jesus was John the Baptist or Elijah. Jesus asked Peter who He was, and the Holy Spirit revealed the truth. Peter answered, “You are the Christ, the Son of the Living God. Matthew 16:16. The Christ is the holy Anointed One sent to earth to reconcile man to God. Jesus’ Name and title reveal His authority and His singular mission on earth. Through His death and resurrection the Father was glorified. And believers are invited to come into the Holy of Holies and enjoy God’s presence as we worship Him. This is truly GOOD News!

The Anointed One sent the Holy Spirit to teach, counsel, and comfort Christians. He gives us wisdom and revelation. In his epistle John alerted believers to beware of antichrists that had already appeared to deceive the saints. He warned us not to be deceived or stray from the truth. We must remain steadfast in faith and continue in the Word of God. God called the church to share the Good News with others. This is at the heart of Water From the Rock’s mission. We are reaching people, young and old, with the truth that Jesus saved us from our sins. He loves those who have given up hope. Jesus sets the captives free.
