The Chief Commandment

As we consider God’s amazing love, it becomes clear that He desires to have an intimate relationship with us. The Lord promised to protect and provide for the saints so that we can enjoy His manifold blessings. Jesus taught us by example that the chief commandment under the New Covenant of grace is to love God and love one another. Yet there is a struggle for control between our flesh and our spirit. As born again believers, we are a spirit with a soul living in a temporary body. The Holy Spirit within us always reveals the truth of God’s Word. It is important to carefully listen for His voice and heed wise counsel. Love looks out for the interests of others. But the enemy of our souls tempts us to gratify ourselves. Under the Old Covenant animal sacrifices were offered to God by the priests. Jesus, our High priest, sacrificed His own life to atone for our sins as the supreme act of love. Grace is a person. He opened the way to salvation for Jews and Gentiles and made one new body, the church. What a glorious plan God revealed in Christ, our Lord. Jesus gave the church the chief commandment that sums up all others: “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your mind, and with all your strength. This is the first commandment… You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” Mark 12:30-31 Love triumphed over evil and defeated the devil. God is so loving, kind, and merciful. Love conquered sin and the grave. Love opened the gates to heaven. Through the power of Jesus’ resurrection we come to understand His compassion and agape love.

Jesus commissioned the saints to share the love of God with others. This can be difficult especially with those who are closest to us. It takes humility, patience, and passion to love our neighbor as ourselves. As Jesus’ disciples, we must not take up offenses, hold grudges, or keep a record of wrongs done to us. 1Corinthians 13 shows us the characteristics of agape love. Read this chapter and take the time to inventory your love walk; how is it going? Ask Jesus to help you with the areas you struggle with the most. Through the power of the Holy Spirit we learn to flow in the anointing and walk in agape love. Jesus’ compassion was tangible; He healed all the sick and set people free from demons. Christ raised the dead and fed thousands of hungry people. His love will never end. Love is patient and kind. Love is not self-serving but seeks the good of others. The Spirit of God, the Helper, dwells in our hearts and helps us walk in love. Faith works by love. Without faith we cannot please God. One cannot say they love God and not love their brothers and sisters. “He who loves his brother abides in the Light.” 1John 2:9-10  How will others experience God’s amazing love? “By this will all men know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.” John 13:35 We must pray for love and unity in the church, the body of Christ. People need to experience Jesus’ compassion and amazing love.
